Iheanacho Rescues Nigeria From Defeat Against Senegal



The Super Eagles of Nigeria in their first official outing for the year faced off with the Teranga Lions of Senegal. The Super Eagles were in high spirits before the game although without captain Mikel Obi who is in China and first choice goal keeper Carl Ikeme who was sick.


John Ogu made a comeback in the Eagles team when he replaced substantive captain Ogenyi Onazi in the 24th minute following a bad tackle. On the 36th minute mark, the Best chance of the match came but Iheanacho dragged his shot across goal with the first half ending goalless.

Senegal, who reached the 2002 FIFA World Cup quarter -finals, started the second half like a house on fire, winning a number of free kicks in the Eagles area.

Sow Moussa gave Senegal a goal lead at the 53rd minute and Akpeyi was on alert seconds later  to palm away another fierce shot from the rampaging Lions, and Nguette came close again in the 58th minute. But the tenor of the game changed on the hour mark, after Nigeria brought in Oghenekaro Etebo for Iwobi and Moses Simon made way for Isaac Success.

Nigeria’s man-of-the-match Ndidi rattled Abdoulaye Diallo in the 62nd minute, and 15 minutes later, the former junior international’s clever pass enabled Success to cause anxiety in the Senegal box.

with Kelechi Iheanacho bringing Nigeria level against their West African opponents in the 83rd minute.
