Romelu Lukaku joins Inter Milan after Man United finalized £ 74 million bid
Romelu Lukaku has finally completed his transfer to Inter Milan after weeks of uncertainty surrounding his existence at Manchester United. The reputed Serie A club had offered £ 54 million for the Belgian striker last month, but intensified their efforts after Dybala’s prohibitive demands ruined the potential swap deal involving Lukaku, between the two clubs.
It has been learnt that Inter will be paying £ 73.75 million for Lukaku, with a sell-on clause inserted into the deal. Lukaku had made 96 appearances for Manchester United and scored 42 goals for them in total. His contract with Inter-Milan will run till 2024. Many soccer predictions involving the Belgian striker were pointing towards a move to the Serie A club. He too had been pretty clear all along that Inter was the only club he wanted as they’re not for everyone. After signing the deal, he announced that he’s with Inter to help them back to the top.
His relationship with Man U deteriorated after Solskjaer’s arrival
Earlier, Lukaku had irked the United’s management by starting training at Anderlecht, his former club in Belgium. He arrived in Milan recently to complete all the medical and paperwork formalities. Federico Pastorello, Lukaku’s agent also flew down to London on August 7 to push through the exit and conclude a rather difficult process.
It’s no news that Lukaku didn’t have the best of relationship with Solskjaer, the new manager at Manchester United. Things deteriorated further over the past few weeks and he was fined by the club for missing training without obtaining prior permission.
Inter eventually gave into Man U demands
After their initial attempt, Inter had revised their offer and upped it to £ 64.7 million including add-ons that were to be paid over couple of years, hoping for the Belgian to join them on loan in the first year. But Manchester United’s constant resistance and the increasing pressure from Antonio Conte, Inter’s new manager, resulted in the bid getting raised to £ 73.75 million on August 7.
As mentioned earlier, the player will be with the club till 2024 and will make a total of £ 300,000 per week. Conte has known Lukaku for a very long time and had always wanted the Belgian in his squad even when he was at the helm of affairs at Chelsea.
Lukaku had joined Manchester United from Everton in a £ 75 million move in July 2017. In his first season with the Red Devils, he scored a total of 27 goals, but could manage no more than 15 in 2018-19. The fee paid by Inter-Milan’s for acquiring Lukaku is the record sum for the club. The earlier record was held by Christian Vierri who was brought over from Lazio in 1999 for a sum of £ 42.5 million.
Man United hoping for a strong show this time around
Manchester United has had a mixed summer transfer window. They finished EPL 2018-19 at a dismal 6th position, with a big 32 points gap between them and the eventual champions Manchester City. However, with Harry Maguire, Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka on their side, they’d be hoping for a better show this time around.
